“When Andrew Mortillo approached me about participating in a Magazine he was planning, I was enthused that students would be taking the initiative to put something so worthwhile together. I never expected, however, that it would be one of the sharpest, most well designed, and most powerful magazines I have seen. This is saying a lot, since I worked for Time Inc. for twenty years (the parent company of Time Magazine, Life, Sports Illustrated, People, Southern Living, etc…). Designer Kari Owens deserves an award for her work—she’s brilliant.”

“I worked with Kari for about five months to create “Life Lessons”, a magazine for James Madison University students. I gave her full creative control over designing the magazine, and to be completely honest, what she created was about as close to perfection as possible. Myself, along with many other students who received the magazine, are still left speechless when seeing what she has created. Kari is more than just a designer. She is a true artist, and an even finer human being. She helped turn my dream into a reality, and for that I am forever grateful. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

“I was very impressed. Kari did an excellent job on her design of Life Lessons Magazine. It is professional, attractive and demonstrates her creative and unique style.”

“While the photographs used through out the piece were clearly shot and edited professional artists I found Kari Owens’ framework for the design, layout, and presentation to be more professional. The style of the work while consistent throughout was engaging and fresh with each turn of the page. She chose a wonderful palette for the project and found ways to make it work through out. I very much appreciated her use of space, light, and line in the design. It is clear that Kari will not stop until the piece reaches a place where she is satisfied, and I doubt she is really ever satisfied. It is also clear that Kari has worked hard to tune in with subtle adjustments to get her elegant effects. It is one thing to know the mechanics of Photoshop and Illustrator it is quite another to be an artist who uses Photoshop and Illustrator. It is clear that Kari’s an artist.”
